This Guards Red Porsche 718 Cayman arrived at FX Detailing after the owner contacted us looking to install a GT4-style rear wing. He had already found a carbon fibre wing that he liked and wanted it supplied, painted and fitted to the vehicle.
There was just one problem.
The customer wanted the wing colour coded in Guards Red to match the rest of the car.
The carbon wing alone cost over £1,000 before paintwork or installation.
Rather than simply selling the most expensive option available, we took the time to understand what the customer was actually trying to achieve and found a much smarter solution.
The result was a cleaner build, a lower overall cost and one very happy customer.
Understanding The Goal
When the owner first contacted us, his objective was clear.
He loved the look of the Porsche Cayman but felt the rear end lacked some of the aggression and visual presence of Porsche's GT4 models.
A GT4-style wing would completely change the profile of the vehicle and give it the more purposeful appearance he was looking for.
However, after discussing the project in more detail, we discovered he planned to paint the carbon wing in Guards Red.
At that point, the exposed carbon finish would never actually be seen.
We explained that there was little sense spending over £1,000 on a carbon component if the carbon weave was going to be completely covered by paint.
Instead, we sourced an alternative wing with the same overall design and profile for approximately half the cost.
Even after paint preparation, colour matching and installation, the customer was still spending roughly what the carbon wing alone would have cost him.
This is exactly why expert guidance matters when modifying a vehicle.

Once the replacement wing arrived, it was prepared and painted to match the factory Guards Red finish of the Cayman.
Colour matching modern Porsche paintwork correctly requires far more than simply applying paint from a colour code.
Different paint batches, lighting conditions and age can all influence how a panel appears once installed.
The goal was simple.
Make the wing look like it belonged on the car from day one.
Once painted, the wing blended seamlessly into the bodywork and looked every bit like a factory-developed performance option.

With the paintwork completed, the wing was installed and carefully aligned to ensure perfect fitment.

Many aftermarket components can look fantastic in photographs but poor alignment or incorrect positioning immediately gives away the fact that a modification has been added later.
