The Car
Only 1,287 were ever built.
The Porsche Carrera GT is one of the most significant road cars ever produced - Porsche's answer to a question no manufacturer had seriously asked before: what happens when you take a Le Mans prototype racing car, make it street legal and offer it to the public without compromise?
The result was a naturally aspirated 5.7-litre V10 producing 612 horsepower, redlining at 8,400rpm. A carbon fibre monocoque chassis. Pushrod suspension derived directly from Formula 1. A six-speed manual gearbox with a wooden gear knob - the material chosen specifically because it could be felt through driving gloves at speed.
It weighs 1,380 kilograms. It will do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. The sound it makes at full throttle is unlike anything else on earth.
And it is now worth, depending on specification and condition, somewhere between one and a half and two and a half million pounds.
The condition of the paintwork matters enormously.
Why This Car Did Not Come to Our Studio
When the owner of this black Carrera GT contacted us, the first conversation was not about products or process. It was about logistics.
A car with this kind of financial and historical significance does not travel unnecessarily. The risks associated with loading a Carrera GT onto a transporter - however professionally operated - simply do not need to exist. There are enough variables in the care of a car like this without adding ones that can be avoided.
The solution was straightforward: we came to the car.
Our mobile luxury detailing service exists precisely for situations like this. We bring the same equipment, the same products and the same standard to a client's private driveway or garage as we deliver in our Charlwood studio - because for clients with vehicles at this level, the convenience and the safety of working at their location outweighs any benefit of the studio environment.
The Challenge of Detailing a Car Worth This Much
Cars at this level present specific challenges that separate genuine hypercar detailing from luxury car detailing - even the very best luxury car detailing.
The Carrera GT's bodywork is predominantly carbon fibre, with body-coloured exterior panels carrying paint that is now over twenty years old. Two decades of storage, driving and environmental exposure - however careful that exposure has been the paint has accumulated contamination, oxidation and microscopic surface defects that require correction.
Before any abrasive product touches any panel on a car worth this much, paint thickness readings are taken across every surface. These readings establish the baseline - the depth of clear coat available - and determine what correction is possible without risk to the paint system beneath. Nothing proceeds until those readings are understood.
Every product selection is made specifically for the paint type, age and condition of the individual surface being worked on. There is no standard protocol applied uniformly. Each panel is treated as a separate assessment.
The second challenge is the colour. Deep black on a car of this age, with this level of significance, is one of the most unforgiving surfaces in detailing. Every swirl mark, every fine scratch, every area of oxidation is visible in direct light in a way that lighter colours or metallics partially conceal. The standard required to return black paint to its genuine potential is higher than for almost any other colour - and the improvement when that standard is achieved is correspondingly dramatic.

The Detail
Working at the client's property in Surrey, the detail followed the same methodical process we apply to every vehicle - adapted for the specific demands of the Carrera GT.
The exterior was decontaminated using pH-neutral products appropriate for the car's paint type and age, removing the iron fallout and environmental contamination that accumulates on any car regardless of how carefully it is stored. Clay bar decontamination followed to address the bonded surface contamination that chemical products alone cannot remove.
Paint correction was carried out inside the client's garage, working panel by panel with products and machine settings selected specifically for each surface. The deep black emerged progressively as the correction proceeded - moving from the haze of two decades of environmental exposure to the ink-like, liquid depth that this paint is capable of at its best.
Protection was selected for long-term durability and compatibility with the car's specific paint chemistry - preserving the corrected finish and making future maintenance safer and simpler.

Porsche Carrera GT Detailing & Ceramic Coating FAQ
What Does a Full Detail on a Porsche Carrera GT Involve?
A Full Detail on an investment-grade supercar like the Carrera GT at our Charlwood, Surrey studio is a multi-day process. It includes safe chemical decontamination, a dry-ice or steam-clean of the engine bay (V10 housing), and a meticulous multi-stage machine polish to restore the original finish to 100% optical clarity.
Is Ceramic Coating Necessary if the Car is Kept in a Collection?
Absolutely. Even for garaged cars, a professional ceramic coating provides a permanent barrier against oxidation and humidity. It simplifies the maintenance wash process, ensuring that when the car is driven, road grime and light contaminants cannot bond to the delicate clear coat.
Can You Apply Ceramic Coating Over Original Porsche Paint?
Yes. In fact, it is the best way to preserve original factory paint. We use a specialist coating that enhances the "wet-look" depth of the finish without altering the original texture, ensuring the car remains in concours condition while being fully protected from UV damage and environmental fallout.
