The Conversation Every New Car Buyer Has

You have spent months choosing it. You have configured every option. You have waited the weeks between order and delivery with the particular anticipation that only a new car produces. And then, somewhere in the handover process, the finance manager sits down and offers you paint protection.

The price varies. The claims are consistent: it will protect your paintwork, repel contamination, make maintenance easier and preserve the finish for years.

Some of what they tell you is technically true. Most of what they sell you is significantly less than what they imply.

What Dealer Paint Protection Actually Is

The paint protection product applied by most dealers during the preparation of a new car is a polymer sealant. It is applied quickly - often in under an hour, across the entire car - by a technician working through a preparation checklist, not a detailer with specialist product knowledge and a commitment to the result.

Polymer sealants are not worthless. They provide a degree of protection and some hydrophobic benefit. But they sit on top of the paint surface rather than bonding chemically to it, and they degrade - through washing, UV exposure and normal use - within a few days rather than the years a professional ceramic coating provides.

They are also typically applied over paint that has not been properly decontaminated or corrected. The transport contamination on a new car - the iron fallout from rail transport, the industrial fallout from shipping, the dealer preparation marks from a rushed pre-delivery clean - is sealed in beneath the sealant rather than removed before it is applied.

What you end up with is a somewhat protected car. Not a properly protected car.

What a Professional Ceramic Coating Actually Provides

A professional ceramic coating is a different technology entirely. The active compound - typically SiO2 or TiO2 - bonds chemically with the clear coat surface rather than sitting on top of it. This creates a hard, semi-permanent layer that becomes part of the paint system rather than a product applied over it.

The result is protection measured in years rather than days, hydrophobic properties significantly more effective than a polymer sealant, resistance to bird dropping acids and tree sap that an untreated clear coat simply cannot provide, and a gloss enhancement that transforms the visual depth of the paint - particularly on metallics and pearls.

Critically, a professional coating is applied after the paint has been properly prepared: fully decontaminated, inspected under specialist lighting, corrected where necessary, and brought to its genuine visual potential before the coating is applied to preserve it. The Ceramic Coating locks in that condition. The dealer sealant locks in whatever condition the paint happened to be in when it was applied and only for a few days.

Our New Car Delivery Service - Surrey & London

For clients collecting a new car - whether from a Surrey or London dealer, or taking delivery directly - we offer a new car delivery detailing service that decontaminates the paint, removes the transit and dealer preparation marks that are present on virtually every new car, carries out the appropriate level of paint correction, and applies a professional ceramic coating before the car is used for the first time.

The first day of ownership is the best time to protect a new car properly. The paint is at its maximum clear coat depth available for any future correction work. The contamination is at its most recent and most removable. And the Ceramic Coating has the most paint life ahead of it to justify the investment.

New Car Ceramic Coating FAQ

Why is a Professional Ceramic Coating Better Than a Dealer Paint Protection Package?

Dealership packages are often polymer-based sealants applied in under an hour without proper paint preparation. At our Surrey studio, a professional ceramic coating involves a multi-day process of chemical decontamination and paint correction. This ensures the coating bonds at a molecular level to the clear coat, providing years of protection rather than months.

Do New Cars Really Need Paint Correction Before Coating?

Yes. Almost every new car arrives with "transit damage" - iron fallout from rail transport or swirl marks from rushed dealership washes. Applying a coating without paint correction seals these defects underneath. We ensure the paint is flawless before locking it in with a ceramic shield.

When is The Best Time to Ceramic Coat a New Car?

The best time is immediately upon delivery, ideally before the car has been driven extensively. Protecting the paint while it is at its thickest and cleanest ensures the best possible bond and maximum longevity for the coating, making future maintenance significantly easier.
